Ghana Itinerary

“It’s Not Really a Vacation. It’s a Return.” The Ghana Learncation isn't just about relaxation — but reconnection? Walk the same land your ancestors walked; stand where history shifted; experience royalty, resilience, and rebirth — in one unforgettable journey? The following are some of the Ghana Learncation activities:

Assin Manso Slave River and Market
Walk the sacred grounds of Assin Manso, the final bathing place where captured Africans took their last bath before being marched to the coast. Stand in reflection by the river and visit the reinterment site honoring ancestral remains returned from the diaspora. This experience is solemn, grounding, and spiritually significant. Afterward, explore the nearby market to engage with local vendors and everyday Ghanaian life.
Cape Coast Slave Dungeon and Castle
Tour the haunting chambers of Cape Coast Castle, one of the largest slave-holding sites during the transatlantic slave trade. Walk through the male and female dungeons and stand before the “Door of No Return.” The guided tour provides historical context that is both sobering and transformative. End with a view of the Atlantic Ocean — the same waters that carried millions into forced exile.
Bonwire Kente Village
Visit Bonwire, the legendary birthplace of Kente cloth, the royal fabric of the Ashanti Kingdom. Watch master weavers create intricate patterns on traditional looms and learn the meaning behind various designs. Each pattern carries symbolism tied to wisdom, leadership, and proverbs. Purchase authentic, handwoven Kente directly from artisans.
Kumasi
Explore Kumasi, the cultural heart of the Ashanti Region and historic capital of the Ashanti Kingdom. Visit vibrant markets such as Kejetia, one of West Africa’s largest open-air markets. Experience the deep-rooted traditions, gold craftsmanship, and royal heritage embedded in the city. Kumasi blends modern Ghanaian life with centuries-old legacy.
Manhyia Palace
Tour Manhyia Palace, the official residence of the Asantehene (King of the Ashanti). The museum showcases royal regalia, historical artifacts, and the story of Ashanti resistance and resilience. Learn about the Golden Stool and the spiritual authority of the Ashanti monarchy. This stop provides deeper understanding of Ghana’s powerful traditional governance system.
Yaa Asantewaa
Visit the memorial honoring Yaa Asantewaa, the fearless Queen Mother who led the Ashanti resistance against British colonial forces. Learn about the War of the Golden Stool and her pivotal role in Ghanaian history. The site celebrates female leadership, courage, and national pride. It is a powerful tribute to resistance and self-determination.
Akwasidae Festival
Attend the vibrant Akwasidae Festival, held every six weeks to honor Ashanti ancestors. Witness a grand durbar featuring the Asantehene adorned in gold regalia, surrounded by chiefs and elders. Drumming, dancing, and colorful traditional attire fill the palace grounds. This ceremony offers rare, authentic immersion into royal Ashanti tradition.
Kwame N'Krumah Memorial
Explore the memorial dedicated to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president and champion of Pan-Africanism. Visit his mausoleum and museum detailing Ghana’s independence struggle. Learn about his vision for African unity and liberation. The park is both historic and inspirational.
Black Star Square (Independence Square)
Stand at Black Star Square, the iconic symbol of Ghanaian independence. See the Black Star Gate and Independence Arch honoring the nation’s freedom from colonial rule. This expansive plaza hosts national celebrations and historic events. It’s a proud emblem of Ghana’s sovereignty.
Shopping at the Center for National Culture
Shop at the Center for National Culture (Arts Centre) in Accra for authentic Ghanaian crafts. Browse handmade jewelry, carvings, drums, textiles, shea butter, and artwork. “I traveled to Ghana and have been back there more than ten times! LOL. I simply love it there.... particularly due to the unmistakable connection I feel there as a Jamaican. Yes, there are differences, indeed - but Ghana has an immediately felt organic familiarity that is comforting and secure. When I'm there I feel like I 'belong.'”
